THE FIVE KEY EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE SKILLS FOR LEADERSHIP

with Lisa Foster, Leadership Coach and Trainer
Friday, September 22, 9am-1pm

Research shows that the higher you go in leadership, the more emotional intelligence accounts for the difference between high performers and average performers. This workshop focuses on the five key emotional intelligence skills that lead to effective leadership:

  • Self-Regard: accepting your strengths and weaknesses, knowing how to compensate for weaknesses without getting triggered.
  • Emotional Self-Awareness: knowing what you feel and why, knowing what others feel and why.
  • Emotional Self-Expression: being able to express yourself non-offensively when emotions are involved.
  • Empathy: Being able to feel what others feel, understanding what motivates others.
  • Decision Making: we don’t always think of decision making as an emotional skill but usually it’s emotions that get in the way of good decisions.

Each of these skills will be illustrated with a story and research. This is a highly interactive workshop offers self-assessments, small group discussions, and role-playing activities for hands-on and practical ways to recognize and grow emotional intelligence skills.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Definitions of each skill, how each one enhances leadership, research demonstrating the impact of each skill.
  • That self-regard and self-awareness are the two fundamental Emotional Intelligence skills on which all the others build.
  • That leaders with self-regard and self-awareness are able to develop self-expression, empathy, and decision making as tools for making their leadership more effective.
  • How these five skills, or lack of them, show up at work and affect leadership
  • How effective leaders identify and control their own and others’ emotions and choose appropriate responses in the moment that lead to higher team performance.
